The Spanish grape bobal has a chequered history but in the right hands can make thrilling wines. Here grown at high altitude near Valencia, this is vibrant with ripe cherry fruit and spicy.

A generously fruited, whistle-clean garnacha made by a young winemaking team of three brothers. They`ve delivered a delicious Spanish red packed with red fruits, black pepper and no small amount of charm.

Abundantly fruity blend of garnacha and carineña (from the Spanish region of the same name). This has delightful jammy fruit and a hint of herbs with fleshy texture and full finish. This comes from a small family project which is now run by third-generation Jorge Nevascues.

12 months ageing in French oak has enhanced this contemporary expression of Rioja. It is toasty, plump and fruity. It's made by Bodegas Palacio, which lies in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa, at the bottom of the road leading up to Laguardia, a spectacular fortified hilltop village set against the backdrop of the Sierra Cantabria.

A limited release for our 150th is this fruity, plummy and smooth Rioja which is mostly garnacha, the grape most commonly used in Rioja in the 19th century. Hailed in our 2024 Wine Championship as 'a classic`, this was a leading light in a tasting where top-end Spanish reds really shone. Textbook traditional-style Rioja showing all the benefits of long ageing in barrel and bottle: fragrant, savoury, richly fruity but delicate and complex. Made by the world-renowned La Rioja Alta bodega, its class was readily apparent in the tasting room.
